Grading:
New Grading Scale
90-100 = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
60-69 = D
00-59 = F
You are expected to keep in mind what an "A" student is:
4 - Outstanding - Standing out among others of its kind; prominent (A) CLASS PARTICIPATION AND CLASSWORK (Learning to learn)
MAKEUP WORK
You are expected to:
- Wear the uniform.
- Follow Directions the first time given.
- Be in your seats with your book, notebook, pencil, and supplies when the bell rings. No passes will be given to retrieve forgotten materials. If you do not bring the textbook on a day that we use it then you will receive an "F" for the day and you will be required to do an alternative assignment. Unsatisfactory tardiness will affect your academic and conduct grade for the nine weeks.
- Raise your hand to be recognized before speaking or standing.
- Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself. Do not throw paper into the trashcan! This room is not a basketball court. Do not interrupt class by getting up to throw away trash.
- Understand that rest-rooms use and drinking water are two things to do on recess time. When you have a REAL EMERGENCY then talk to your teacher. Only 3 emergencies are accepted per term of nine weeks.
- Keep in mind that the teacher dismisses the class, not the bell. The more order you show when the bell rings, the faster dismissal will occur.
- Behave in an adult manner and respect the rights of others at all times. Good manners are mandatory.
- Not lay the head down on the desk. If you are sick or not feeling well, you will be issued a pass to the clinic. Passes will only be given for emergency situations.
- Behave with a substitute teacher as respectfully and cooperatively as you are with your teacher.
- Understand that the desk, lab tables, and chairs are not to be defaced. Please do not write or marl on them. Any litter around your desk should be picked up and thrown in the trashcan at the end of the period. The sinks in the lab tables are not for trash, use a garbage can.
- Know that eating, chewing, drinking or grooming are not allowed in the classroom.
- Understand that the rolling chairs in the room are only to be used at the computer stations.
- Use the ActivBoard (electronic board) only with the teacher authorization, and use only the SPECIAL PENCIL to write on it.
- Covered book, notebook or science folder, and assignment due.
- Scientific calculator, computer memory stick or USB drive.
- Pencil, pen, ruler, paper, graph or math paper, eraser, and protractor (physics students only).
You are expected to develop the following work habits:
- Head all papers on the top-right margin in the following way:
- DUE DATE (Month/Day/Year).
- LAST NAME, FIRST NAME - STUDENT NUMBER. (The penalty for no name or student number on a paper will be no credit for that work).
- SUBJECT & PERIOD NUMBER.
- The center of the first or second line must have the TITLE and LABEL of the work (ask the teacher about this).
- Take notes in class at all times including all the examples covered in class.
- Do your home learning assignments as soon as you arrive to your house. Home learning assignments will be assigned two to five times a week. All home learning assignments and class assignments must be handed in on time. Home learning assignments are due at the beginning of the period, not during or at the end of the period. You will leave it on the designated area of the teacher's desk before you seat. A student with an unexcused tardy will not be allowed to turn in home learning assignments for that day. If you were absent, you are responsible for the missed assignments. Following an absence, it is the student's responsibility to find out what work was missed. Each student should arrange to have classmates to contact when absent. Absences are very costly in lab classes. Ask about the home learning assignments hotline.
- Be aware that missed work is assigned an F until it is made up. Missed home learning assignments for excused absences are due the following day or the grade will become a permanent F. Make-up day for exam, quiz or lab will be arranged with the teacher on the next attendance to class. It may happen that same day. The student must come prepared for that. The teacher will only accept late work corresponding to unexcused absences at his discretion. The maximum grade for late work is "C". Make-up work for assignments given in class while the student was present, are unacceptable.
- Be aware that cheating will not be tolerated. It will result in a zero, a double grade cut in your overall conduct grade, and a call to a parent.
- Know that extra credit work will be available intermittently throughout the year. Extra credit will not be available for those caught cheating.
- Understand that safety must be your first concern in the laboratory. Any student who cannot behave appropriately will lose the privilege of participating in the lab, and will receive a zero for that lab. Unsafe conduct during a lab can result in a referral to an assistant principal and possible suspension.
- Take advantage that I will be intermittently available for help through e-mail. Keep visiting my Webpage (http://teachers.dadeschools.net/spagani/) for announcements, messages, tremendous amount of science-related links, home learning assignments, etc.
- Register to your school's e-mail and learn how to use it. You must check it at least twice daily. Various assignments and projects will be assigned only through there. Ask the teacher about this.
- Be prepared to pay a laboratory fee. The amount and due date will be announced short after the beginning of the school year. Make checks payable to "Coral Reef Senior High School". Fee money is used to replace glassware and equipment, and to repair and service equipment.
- Be aware that a student accumulating ten (10) or more unsatisfactory absences for a full year course will be subject to the withholding of the final grade pending review by the Attendance Review Committee.
